Riding & Knitting Retreat
June 16th – June 22nd 2024
Come join our first Riding & Knitting Retreat at Hestaland! This retreat combines two hobbies that run deep in Icelandic culture and mixes them with relaxation, great company, and delicious home-cooked meals featuring local Icelandic ingredients.
It will be led by Toni Carr (aka Joan of Dark), knitter and author of four books:
Knockdown Knits
Knits for Nerds
Geek Knits
The Lopapeysa Sweater: A Journey North in Search of Iceland’s Iconic Knitwear
Joan’s designs have been featured in several other publications, she’s been a guest on the TV shows Uncommon Threads and Knitty Gritty, and has taught classes for many years.
Whether you want to learn to knit or are an advanced knitter, this retreat’s dual class schedule will cater to your goals and skillset. Joan will have complete beginners knitting by the end of the week, and she’ll help advanced knitters further their skill sets. Joan will even be creating an original lopapeysa pattern for this retreat.
Similarly, the week is suitable for riders of all levels and will include plenty of riding through the stunning Borgarfjörður area, which is known known for its beautiful and extensive trail options.
The itinerary is being finalized but aims to include a visit to a wool mill, sheep farm, the store of the Icelandic hand knitting association, local geothermal springs, and more
