Riding & Knitting Retreat

with Toni Carr (aka Joan of Dark)

June 16-22, 2024

Come join Hestaland’s first-ever Riding & Knitting Retreat! This all-inclusive seven-day retreat combines two hobbies that run deep in Icelandic culture. Knitters and riders of all levels will be in for an unforgettable experience of knitting under the midnight sun and delightful horseback riding through the Borgarfjordur area, which is known for its beautiful and extensive trail options.

You’ll gain insight into old and new Icelandic knitting traditions with a focus on the newest and most famous Icelandic lopapeysa sweater, receive expert knitting instruction in daily workshops, visit a sheep farm and wool mill, local knitting hot spots, and a geothermal hot spring, among other destinations. Last but not least, you’ll have the opportunity to ride at least once a day.

Whether you want to learn to knit or are an advanced knitter, this retreat’s dual class schedule will cater to your goals and skillset. Joan will have complete beginners knitting by the end of the week, and she’ll help advanced knitters further their skill sets. Joan will even be creating an original lopapeysa pattern for this retreat. Similarly, the week is suitable for riders of all levels and will include plenty of scenic riding. Hestaland staff will match riders with horses to suit their skill and comfort level.

You’ll be led by Toni Carr (aka Joan of Dark), knitter and author of four books: Knockdown Knits, Knits for Nerds, Geek Knits, and the Lopapeysa Sweater: A Journey North in Search of Iceland’s Iconic Knitwear. Joan’s designs have been featured in several other publications, she’s been a guest on the TV shows Uncommon Threads and Knitty Gritty, and has taught classes for many years.
