Escape the everyday and immerse yourself in the pristine beauty of Iceland’s highlands. Our adventurous treks take you through rugged landscapes and scenic terrain only accessible on horseback. Each day concludes at our cozy countryside guesthouse, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner, unwind in the hot tub, and share stories with fellow riders over your favorite beverage.
Rider Experience:
Our treks are suited for intermediate to experienced riders. While we don’t require advanced skills, you should feel confident at all speeds and be comfortable in the saddle for several hours each day across varied terrains. Our rides are conducted at a steady, medium pace most of the time, with occasional faster segments—so comfort with different paces is essential.
Adventure Spirit & Confidence:
We travel with a large, loose herd of horses—a truly exhilarating experience! To fully enjoy it, you should be adventurous, confident, and unafraid to step outside your comfort zone. If you’re new to trail riding or tend to be cautious or fearful, our Ultimate Trek might not be the best fit. However, we’d love to welcome you to Hestaland on our other tours, which cater to riders of all levels and don’t involve large herds.
Preparation:
Good preparation makes for a more enjoyable adventure. Prior to your trip, we recommend focusing on your overall fitness and riding as much as possible. While the primary gait used is the tolt, you may encounter all gait types during the trek.
Mounting:
Must be able to mount the horse with minimal assistance or independently.
Health & Safety:
Horseback riding involves inherent risks. We strongly advise ensuring you have appropriate health insurance coverage.
- Transportation & Fees:
All ground transfers, including pickup at Reykjavik’s BSI Bus Terminal at 10:30 am on Day 1 and drop-off there at noon on Day 7. (Most guests book the Flybus for seamless airport transfers to/from KEF/BSI.) - Preparation & Orientation:
1.5 days of training and orientation around the farm, matching riders with suitable horses for safety and enjoyment. - Trekking Experience:
Four full days of riding through Iceland’s stunning highlands, covering 25–35 km daily with a herd of 50–60 horses, riding 2–3 horses per day. - Accommodations (6 nights, 7 days):
Comfortable, cozy guesthouse rooms with private bathrooms, based on double occupancy. - Culinary Delights:
Nourishing breakfast, hearty lunches, and delicious dinners—including wine and beer to unwind after the day’s adventure. - Gear & Guides:
High-quality Astund saddles and expert guidance from Guðmar Pétursson, with over 16 years of trekking experience. Small, intimate groups for a personalized experience.
Day 1–2:
Meet and match with your horses (Guðmar has a knack for identifying iconic duos!) as we explore the farm, head out on trail rides, and prepare for our journey ahead. Get familiarized and receive orientation to ensure you’re comfortable and confident for the adventure ahead.
Days 3–6:
Set out on full-day treks, with packed lunches fueling your ride through breathtaking scenery. Traverse otherwordly landscapes with a loose herd of 50–60 horses, covering 25–35 km daily. Each evening, you’ll leave your horses at the day’s endpoint and return to our guesthouse by bus just in time for a delicous dinner, ready to do it all again the next day. On the final trekking day, we’ll rejoin the herd and return it to Hestaland, proud of the incredible journey we’ve accomplished.
